Fort Stanton Historic Site, Carrizozo, as a military post along the Chihuahuan Trail. The fort was named for Colonel Edwin V. Stanton, secretary of war during the American Civil War. The fort served as a supply depot and staging area for Union troops during the war. After the war, the fort was decommissioned and abandoned until it was purchased by the state of New Mexico in 1977. Today, Fort Stanton is open to the public and is a historic landmark.
